“Surprising developments have surfaced in the hit-and-run accident that killed a man Monday night.

Hillsborough County deputies say someone struck Eric A. Lewis as Lewis walked in the roadway on 79th Street near Fir Drive.

The incident was reported shortly before 9 p.m.

Deputies say Lewis, 43, was wearing dark clothing and the impact was low speed.

The Sheriff’s Office now says a HART-line public bus, driven by Steven Rickert, hit the man.

However, deputies say Rickert was not aware he hit anyone until he saw media reports the next morning.

Traffic homicide detectives met with Rickert and examined the bus. During the examination, they found physical evidence that linked the bus to the victim.

Rickert told deputies he was westbound on Fir Drive when he turned north on 79th Street. Deputies said he was unaware he struck anyone at that location.

Detectives will continue conducting interviews and analyzing evidence.

The Sheriff’s Office says it will then turn over its evidence to the State Attorney’s Office for review.”
