Ask Your Attorney About Alternative Sentencing

November 15th, 2010 · No Comments · Criminal Defense, Uncategorized

alternative-sentence-flIf you are facing a jail sentence at the Pinellas County Jail, make sure your lawyer looks into the “Alternative Sentencing Unit“, which is run by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.  If a person qualifies for “alternative sentencing” , they can get credit for a jail sentence WITHOUT ACTUALLY BEING IN JAIL!

This is not some kind of trick.  The jail is operated by the Sheriff and because of issues like overcrowding and increased costs associated with housing inmates, the “Alternative Sentencing” , and in particular electronic monitoring, was developed.  There are specific program conditions and it is no available for every situation.  For example, a client has to have no violent criminal record in the last 3 years, must be employed, and must have transportation to and from his/her place of employment. Certain offenses will make you ineligible for the program.

But if you qualify for the program, you can “legally” avoid jail altogether, while receiving credit for a “jail” sentence.  I recently had 2 clients, one accused of felony DUI and the other accused of misdemeanor DUI.  The clients were sentenced to Pinellas County jail sentences totaling more than four (4) months.  Each client was evaluated for the electronic monitoring form of alternative sentencing.  Each client is now serving their “jail sentence” from home while wearing an ankle monitor.

If you are facing a jail sentence in Pinellas County, FL, make sure you consider “alternative sentencing.”
